TUSCALOOSA ?? Demetrius Jemison, a 6-foot-7, 225 pound forward who helped lead Huffman High School in Birmingham to the 2006 Alabama 6A Final Four’s championship game has signed a scholarship to attend and play basketball at the University of Alabama.
“I’m very excited,” said Alabama head basketball coach Mark Gottfried. “I think Demetrius is going to be a very good player here at the University of Alabama. He’s a powerful player who is going to bring a level of toughness to our team. He’s coming from a winning program at Huffman where winning is important. I believe he’s going to fill a need for us as a player who can fill a number of positions for us around the basket and around the perimeter.”
Jemison averaged 13.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 blocks per game this past year, his senior season at Huffman. As a junior last season he averaged 17.9 points. He scored more than 2,000 points and grabbed more than 1,000 rebounds during his high school career. He was a four-year starter on Huffman’s varsity team. Jemison’s honors this season have included 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Metro, and the 2006 Final Four All-Tournament Team this past season. As a junior he was named the Birmingham City MVP.
