ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- The Alabama soccer team lost a close 1-0 decision this weekend to the Auburn Tigers at the Orange Beach Classic in Orange Beach, Ala. The Tigers scored the game-winning goal 20:00 into the second half on a cross in front of the Alabama net.
Despite the loss Alabama head coach Don Staley was pleased with what he saw out of his team, a squad that has played much of this spring with limited numbers.
“I thought our goalkeepers really stepped up and played well tonight as did a few others,” Staley said. “Jamie Zimmerman and Hayley MacDonald did a good job of controlling things at midfield for us tonight. From a learning and improvement standpoint I was happy. We’re getting better and that’s what we play the spring for. Auburn played great tonight. We made a few mistakes and Auburn was able to capitalize on them.”
“It’s always a pleasure to come down here and play in this game each spring,” Staley said. “We look forward to being back down here in November for the SEC Tournament.”
Alabama is now 2-1 on the spring and will host the Crimson Classic this weekend at the UA Soccer Stadium. The Tide will participate in five shortened games this Saturday. Action begins at 10 a.m.
