
Tide Has Disappointing Start at Hootie at Bulls Bay

Alabama, which has finished among the top five in six tournaments this season, opened play here at 15 over par. Wake Forest emerged as the first day leader, shooting nine under, 275. It was one of two teams that shot under par team rounds as South Carolina, one of the tournament’s co-hosts, is five under par, carding 279 as a team. North Carolina is next at third in the standings at plus four (288). Central Florida is fourth (289), and Kentucky fifth (292). There is a three way tie at 6th among Clemson, the College of Charleston and Florida State (all at 293), a tie at 9th between Auburn and Augusta State (296), and a tie at 11th between Vanderbilt and Virginia (297). At 13th is North Carolina State (298), at 14th Alabama (299), and at 15th LSU (300).
Two golfers share the first round’s lead in the individual standings. South Carolina’s Eirik Tage Johansen and Wake Forest’s Doug Manchester are both four under par after shooting scores of 67 Sunday.
Alabama’s best round came from Lance Walker. The Trussville native shot 74, three over par, and is among a tie at 30th. A stroke back but among a tie at 41st are three Tide golfers, Mark Harrell, Matthew Swan and Gator Todd who all turned in scores of 75 which is four over par. And a stroke behind that trio is Alabama’s Stewart Whitt who is among a tie at 51st after carding a 76.
