The tournament is played at Bulls Bay Golf Club and is a part of a fundraiser for the Hootie and the Blowfish Foundation. Hosted by the University of South Carolina, the College of Charleston and Clemson University, the field also includes Alabama, Auburn, Augusta State, Central Florida, Florida State, Kentucky, LSU, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest.
Play in the 54-hole tournament begins on Sunday, March 26 and concludes on Tuesday, March 28th.
Alabama finished fifth this past weekend at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational, producing top 25 individual finishes for Mark Harrell (8th), Gator Todd (T-17th) and Matthew Swan (T-19th). The Tide has produced all season, playing a schedule rated among the top 10 in strength of schedule.
“The top five finishes??I think that’s just a tribute to the players. It shows that they’ve worked hard,” said Alabama head men’s golf coach Jay Seawell. “That’s kind of how you judge. You want to give yourself a chance to win week in and week out, and when you get top five you are putting yourself in that position. Especially with our schedule: when you’re finishing in the top five, you’re beating a lot of good teams. However, we’re not satisfied with top five, so we’re continuing to work and correct the things that are keeping us from winning. So we are working toward that goal of winning tournaments. To do that, we’re going to need to stay a little more focused on some things, the game; the shot we’re hitting. We got off to an awful start last week at the Schenkel. The first nine holes were really poor, and then we played good after that. But unfortunately, those nine holes kept us from being in that lead group. And to our boys’ credit, they turned it around. However, it kept us from winning. So we need to learn from that. But I do think some wins are down the road for our team just because of the talent and the work ethic and I look forward to those times.”
Competing for Alabama in this tournament will be Mark Harrell, Matthew Swan, Gator Todd, Stewart Whitt, Lance Walker.
The tournament is typically held during Spring Break and, because of that, veers slightly from typical tournaments in that this one includes a concert the golf teams will attend. Hootie and the Blowfish will perform.
“Hootie and the Blowfish host this tournament so it kind of has a college atmosphere off the golf course and on it, too. They throw a free concert for the players, so it’s a neat environment. It’s totally different from anything we play all year long. But I think the players enjoy it a great deal and of course we play against some great teams in the field.”
