University of Alabama freshman Alonzo Gee had many impressive accomplishments before he even set foot on campus. This 6’6” forward from Palm Beach, Florida was a 2005 Mr. Basketball candidate. He helped lead his high school team to a state championship during his junior year. Along the way he grabbed many awards at other prestigious events. Gee has brought his intensity and talent to the Crimson Tide basketball team this season, including on Wednesday night when he led Alabama’s 71-61 win against Auburn with 21 points off the bench. I caught up with Gee before practice to get to know one of the newest additions to the team.
Why did you choose to come to the University of Alabama?
“It was a good environment. I liked the coaches. I get along with the players. It’s a good campus.”
What’s the biggest adjustment you’ve had to make from high school to college?
“Coming from high school everyone was a star. Here we all have to play together. It’s also kind of hard to focus on school and basketball.”
What’s your favorite memory from your freshman season?
“The Tennessee game. We played really well as a team. Everybody was scoring and everybody was playing defense. We all just played really good.”
Do you have any pre-game rituals? How do you get focused for the games?
“I read my Bible before the game. Every single game I read my Bible. That’s about it.”
Who was your favorite basketball player when you were growing up?
“When I was growing up, I would have to say Magic Johnson. Now there are a lot of them; I would say Dwayne Wade is my favorite now.”
Where would you like to travel for an away game? What team would you want to play in their own gym?
“I really don’t like playing away. I like all home games. I like having the home court advantage.”
If you had your won college basketball team and could pick guys from any college, who would your starting five be?
“I would keep my same starting five we have here.”
