The University of Alabama soccer team kicked off its spring competition season this weekend with a 1-0 win on the road over the Samford Bulldogs.
Hayley MacDonald scored the game-winning goal at the 24:00 mark when she collected a rebound in front of the Samford net and booted it past the keeper. Jessie Deegan was credited with the assist.
“It is spring, but I’m very proud of how we managed the game with limited numbers,” Alabama head coach Don Staley said. “There is no question what caliber team Samford is. It was a very competitive game.”
Staley added that he was pleased with the performances of sophomore defender Chelsea Stang and freshman Colleen Posey. Kara Gudmens also had a standout game in the net for the Crimson Tide.
The game marked the return of Jordan O’Banion as well. O’Banion saw her first game action since tearing her ACL in the Southeastern Conference opener last season. Transfer Jamie Zimmerman got her first look at midfield as well since joining the team in January.
Alabama will continue to participate in spring drills and will compete in the Southeast College Showcase in Decatur, Ala. on April 1.
