BAMA BASEBALL NOTEBOOK:
*Alabama head coach Jim Wells coached his 1,000th all-time game in his 17-year head coaching career when the Crimson Tide faced South Alabama in Mobile on Wednesday, March 8th. Wells first game as a head coach came Feb. 12, 1990 as Northwestern State defeated Houston Baptist, 7-0.
*Alabama saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end as the Crimson Tide was swept in a three-game series at No. 6 Nebraska this weekend in Lincoln. The Crimson Tide was the first-ever Southeastern Conference team to play the Cornhuskers in Lincoln.
*The three losses at Nebraska marked the first time since 2002 that Alabama had been swept in a three-game series when the Crimson Tide lost its final three games of the season at LSU. The last time UA suffered a three-game sweep against a non-conference opponent was Feb. 24-26, 2001 when the Tide lost three games at Central Florida.
*Alabama is now 1-5 (.167) against ranked teams this season. In addition to the three-game sweep at No. 6 Nebraska, Alabama also lost its first series of the season to No. 26 Winthrop.
*Alabama is in the midst of a stretch where it is playing seven straight games against ranked teams. The streak includes games against No. 6 Nebraska, No. 24 Southern Miss and No. 28 Georgia.
*The Crimson Tide offense struggled in its three game series at Nebraska this weekend. The Tide hit just .180 (18-for-100) with three doubles and four RBI. Alabama was outscored 13-4 in the series. Alabama was 1-for-26 (.038) against the Huskers with runners in scoring position, including 0-for-3 with the bases loaded.
*Alabama is hitless in last 25 at-bats with the bases loaded, dating back to David Ferazza’s RBI single in the fourth inning against Nebraska on March 10.
*Junior CF Emeel Salem was the Tide’s leading hitter at Nebraska, going 3-for-12 (.250) with two double and two runs scored.
*Senior 3B Matt Downs was Alabama’s leading hitter last week, going 4-for-15 (.267) with three runs scored and four RBI. He had three hits and two RBI in the win at South Alabama. Downs had one RBI in Sunday’s loss at Nebraska.
*Alabama hit .206 (28-for-136) for the week, with 11 runs, six doubles and 11 RBI in four games.
*Junior LHP Wade LeBlanc held Nebraska to one run and five hits in eight innings on March 10. He added one walk and struck out six Husker batters.
*Freshman RHP Tommy Hunter was 1-1 last week against South Alabama and Nebraska. He earned the win at South Alabama on March 8 and was the tough-luck loser at No. 6 Nebraska (7 IP, 4 H, 4 E4, 2 BB, 3 K) on March 12. In the loss at Nebraska, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.
*Alabama will face No. 24 Southern Miss on Wednesday, March 15 in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide owns a 66-23 series lead over the Golden Eagles. USM won last year (7-4) in Hattiesburg for their first win over Alabama since 1987. Coach Wells is 11-1 (.917) in his career against USM.
*Alabama opens SEC play this weekend at No. 28 Georgia. The Crimson Tide took two of three from the Bulldogs last year in Tuscaloosa, but has not won a series in Athens since 1998. Georgia owns a 60-54-1 all-time series lead. Coach Wells is 20-11 (.545) against Georgia. Coach David Perno is 5-7 (.417) against Alabama.
