“I’m extremely excited that we signed two athletes who want to be at Alabama,” Green said. “It’s very important to us that we recruit kids who want to come here. Calli and Elizabeth are great additions to our squad. In signing these two, we added to our size, athleticism, strength and they both have a tremendous work ethic. But, what I like most about them is that they are extremely competitive. They are well-rounded athletes but fierce competitors.”
A 6-3 right side hitter, Salstrand should help improve the Tide’s game at the net as she averaged three blocks per game this past season. Though relatively new to the sport, the Rockford native earned all-tournament honors four times over her career at Guilford High School.
“Elizabeth gives us something we haven’t really had and that is a large presence at the net from the right side hitter position,” Green said. “She averaged three blocks a game. She’s so young in her development as a volleyball player. I think her game will just take off with more training and experience. She plays for a very competitive club and seems to fit our current team really well.”
Johnson comes to the Tide from four-time state volleyball champion Wahlert High School in Dubuque, Iowa. The 6-0 middle blocker garnered numerous individual honors throughout her high school career including being named first team all-state the last two seasons.
“Calli comes from a long line of winners from Wahlert High School in Iowa. They won four state championships and she has been a contributor on all four of those teams. She’s well-rounded as a player. She can play the middle. She has great instincts and a sixth sense about her. She gets off of the floor fast and her lateral speed is the best I have seen in a long time.”
Both athletes will make their collegiate debuts when the Tide opens the 2006 season, hosting the Crimson Tide Invitational on August 25 in the CAVE.
