BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- University of Alabama freshman right-hander Tommy Hunter (Indianapolis, Ind.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, in an announcement by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Hunter earned the award after throwing eight shutout innings in Sunday's 7-0 win over Florida International as the Crimson Tide completed a three-game sweep at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
In his first start of the 2006 season, Hunter held FIU to just two hits and struck out six batters as he teamed with sophomore David Robertson to post the Crimson Tide's second shutout of the weekend and third of the season.
"Tommy Hunter would have competed well against most SEC teams the way he pitched on Sunday," Alabama head coach Jim Wells said. "I thought he did a really nice job."
Hunter gave up a leadoff single to start the game to FIU center fielder Bryan Pullin, but faced the minimum through six innings after a first-inning double play. Hunter retired 17 consecutive FIU batters before Pullin doubled to lead off the seventh inning. Hunter stranded the runner at third base and left after eight innings, where he faced just one batter over the minimum.
In four games this season, Hunter is 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA. He was worked 14 1/3 innings and allowed 12 hits, two runs and one earned run, with 12 strikeouts and no walks. He has held the opposition to a .222 batting average.
