Junior middle blocker Crystal Hudson of the Alabama volleyball team has added another postseason award to her credit by being named an honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)
“What a great honor for Crystal, it is nice to see one of our players earn national attention for their consistent play throughout the season” head coach Judy Green said. “This shows how our program is growing on the national level.” Hudson, a native of Hueytown, had one of the best seasons in Tide volleyball history in 2006. She tallied 452 kills to lead the team while hitting .384 for the season, the fourth-best single-season percentage in school history. Hudson posted her 1,000th career kill in a win over Tennessee in early November, becoming the 10th player in school history to accomplish that feat. A first team All-Southeastern Conference honoree and an AVCA All-Region performer, Hudson also notched a spot in the Tide’s defensive records after recording 106 block assists on the season, the seventh-best total in school history. Hudson currently ranks in the top 10 in the Alabama career charts in kills, attack attempts, hitting percentage, block solos and block assists. “I know that Crystal understands she could not have done this without any of her teammates” Green added. “This should only motivate her to become an even better player next season.” The honor made Hudson the second player in school history to earn AVCA honorable mention accolades. Erin Heffner was granted the honor in 2003 and 2004. Nine Foster earned honorable mention honors from Volleyball Magazine in 1995. Behind Hudson’s leadership, the Crimson Tide earned its second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth in 2006. Alabama fell to Stephen F. Austin in the opening round.
