“I think it’s good for the recognition of our program, but at the same time, I don’t know that it matters in the here and now, just today, with our team,” said Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried who has coached Alabama to as high as No. 1 in the nation in the AP poll, for two weeks in late December 2002. “We’ve got a long way to go to become a good basketball team. But it is nice for the recognition, and, hopefully we can play well enough throughout the year to truly earn that.”
Last season the Crimson Tide started out at No. 15 and went on to finish 18-13 overall and bowed out in the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 62-59 loss to Final Four team UCLA.
