TUSCALOOSA ?? Mark Gottfried’s University of Alabama basketball team climbed two spots in both polls released Monday. Alabama is No. 6 in the Associated Press rankings and No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Crimson Tide is 5-0, with wins, in order, against Jackson State, Middle Tennessee, Iowa, Xavier and Texas Southern.
Alabama’s most active season in the Top 10 under Gottfried’s era previously came in 2002-03. Alabama began the season at No. 8 and spent November 11, 2002 through January 15, 2003 in the AP Top 10. Its highest ranking that year was the school’s highest ranking ever when Alabama climbed to No. 1 for two straight weeks in the December 23 and December 30th polls. That season marked its last time in the Top 5 as its last time in the AP top five was at No. 4 in the January 6, 2003 poll. Alabama started the 2006-07 season at No. 11 AP and No. 12 Coaches in the October 27 preseason poll and moved into the AP Top 10 at No. 10 the following week and into the Coaches Top 10 at No. 8 on November 18.
