TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama volleyball team has signed two athletes to national letters of intent and are set to compete for the Crimson Tide beginning in the fall of 2007. Head coach Judy Green added setter Lauren Martin, of Sebastopol, Calif., and outside hitter/middle blocker Alyssa Meuth to her roster.
Meuth, a native of Helotes, Texas, starred for O’Connor High School in Helotes. She helped her team earn a district and an area championship this season after leading OHS to a district title in 2005. A second team all-district selection last season, she was twice named Player of the Week in her area during her career. The 5-11 Meuth set career marks with 28 kills and 20 digs in separate matches as a senior.
“Alyssa is an untapped, exciting athlete,” said Green. “She is another player who has good all-around skills and has played middle and outside in high school and in club. She is someone who is in the very early stages of becoming a great volleyball player and I look forward to working with her and helping her move her game forward. She is committed, driven and absolutely loves the University of Alabama and is looking forward to being in this program.”
Meuth led her team in kills and served as captain this season. A National Honor Society member, she competed for the Texas Volleyball Club and SATX club team. The daughter of Todd Meuth and Jo Ann Pritulsky, Meuth plans to major in education at the Captsone.
Martin is a 5-10 setter from Sebastopol, Calif., where she played for Analy High School and for the Empire Volleyball Club based in Santa Rosa. Martin helped lead her high school team to two consecutive undefeated records in league play and helped AHS capture a North Coast Section title last weekend and competes in the Northern California sectionals in late November.
“I think Lauren is one of the best setters in the class of 2007,” said Green. “She is extremely driven and athletic with an incredible feel and knowledge of the game of volleyball. Lauren possesses great court leadership skills and I think she is a complete setter that can serve well, play incredible defense and has the ability to pass. The thing I like most about her is her competitive attitude and spirit when she plays. She plays with a lot of passion.”
A 2004 AAU All-American, Martin has earned MVP honors in her high school league the past three years and was named 2005 All-Empire Female Athlete of the Year. She was also a member of her school’s honor roll all four years. Martin is the daughter of Guy and Libby Martin.
The Crimson Tide finished its regular season last weekend with a sweep of South Carolina and Georgia. The 2006 NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 26.
