BIRMINGHAM ?? University of Alabama sophomore defensive specialist Amy Pauly, who has already made her mark on the Tide volleyball records, added another one to her list of accomplishments this afternoon by being named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in 2006.
Pauly, a native of Burr Ridge, Ill., set a school record earlier this season with 35 digs in a match against Kansas State and currently has 481 digs to her credit this season, the fourth-highest single-season total in UA history. She was named Defensive Player of the Week two times previously this year, earning the honor in the fourth and seventh weeks of the season.
Previously, Tide players had earned only one SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor in a season. Rachael Green won the honor in 2003 and Jessica Yearout claimed the award in 2004.
Pauly earned her most recent honor by notching 42 digs in Alabama’s wins over Georgia and South Carolina in the final weekend of the season, an average of over six digs per game. Pauly also had just three reception errors on 35 attempts for the Tide.
Alabama finished the regular season with a 17-12 overall mark and earned third place in the SEC with a 12-8 league record. The NCAA announces the 64-team NCAA Tournament field on Sunday, Nov. 26.
