
Kretschman Helps Lead USA Softball to Japan Cup Championship

Yokohama, Japan ?? Former Alabama softball All-American Kelly Kretschman went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in to help lead the USA Softball Women’s National team to a 7-0 victory over Japan in the championship game of the 2006 Japan Cup at Yokohama Stadium.
The U.S. came out strong with three runs in the first inning, including a RBI single by Kretschman. Two more runs in the second inning would push the lead to 5-0 for the U.S. Kretschman singled in Jessica Mendoza for the fifth run. The U.S. would not scored again until the fifth inning when they added on two more runs for a 7-0 victory.
Kretschman was joined by Natasha Watley, Laura Berg and Mendoza with two hits each in the game. Monica Abbott allowed just two hits while striking out five to pick up the win on the mound.
The Japan Cup Championship was the third title of the year for the USA Softball team. They also captured titles at the II World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City and the ISF Women’s World Championship in Beijing, China.
