TUSCALOOSA ?? Two high school seniors have signed National Letters of Intent to attend school at and play golf for the
University of Alabama.
Alabama has signed Tuscaloosa’s Hunter Slatton and Spencer Cole, a senior at the Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla.
Slatton attends Northridge High School and has been a four-time All-State selection, winning state individual championships in 2003 and 2005. GolfWeek magazine ranks him No. 32 among the Class of 2007 recruits. The 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur participant was medalist in helping his former school, Tuscaloosa Academy, win the 2003 state title. At Northridge in 2004, he finished eighth and his team second at the state championships. In 2005 Northridge finished second and he was medalist, and in 2006 both Slatton and the team finished fourth at the state championships. Slatton is one of 12 golfers nationally to be named a Hewlett Packard Scholastic Junior All-American and is the Tuscaloosa News’ 2005 and 2006 High School Golf MVP. At the 2005 Press Thorton Future Masters he shot 74-66-68/208 and in the 2006 Footjoy Invitational, he shot 69-71-73-73/286.
Cole, who is a native of Greer, South Carolina, is the 2005 International Junior Golf Tour Player of the Year. He won five of seven events on the tour. He is a two-time American Junior Golf Association All-America, winning the honors in 2005 and 2006. In 2006 he won both the MCI Junior Heritage championship and the Hargray Junior Championship. In 2004 he won the AJGA’s Miromar Lakes championship. Cole made the 2006 Canon Cup East team and played in the 2003 South Carolina/Georgia Matches and the 2006 South Carolina/Canada Matches. His all-time low round is a 62, though his tournament all-time low round score is 64.
“We’re really excited about our signing class for 2007,” said Alabama head golf coach Jay Seawell whose Alabama team is ranked No. 1 in the nation. “I think the two guys who signed National Letters of Intent with us are among the best players in the country, and I think they fit into what we’re trying to do: build a national power. We’re looking forward to having them both. They’re two good students and two good men, so I think they’ll be a great attribute to the University of Alabama and to Alabama Golf.”
