The University of Alabama Rowing team closed out its fall with its best outing of its inaugural season at the Head of the South Regatta in Augusta, Ga. this weekend coming away with its first ever gold medal finishes. The Tide competed in four races, winning two and medaling in all four.
"We've been moving things around all fall and I thought that everything really came together nicely this weekend," head coach Larry Davis said. "Not only did we get our first wins at this meet, but we beat some folks who had beaten us before, and those we had beaten before, we put some more distance between us this time out."
Alabama won the Women's Championship 8+ with a time of 20:47.7, more than 20 seconds ahead of second place Georgia. The Tide also won the Women's Championship 4+ race, beating out second place Jacksonville University by a minute with a 22:31.7.
In the Women's Lightweight 4+, the Tide finished second behind Georgia's "A" boat, posting a 24:34.9. In the Novice 8+ Alabama grabbed third and fourth by a slim margin. The Tide's "A" boat finished with a 22:50.0 while the "B" turned in a 22:50.2. The Tide's third novice 8 boat finished ninth.
"Our three novice boats did a really good job," Davis said. "Our "A" boat was really close job to get into second and overall we saw some good improvement from the week before."
With the fall season over, Alabama begins to prepare for the spring season and dual meet competition. The Crimson Tide returns to action Sunday, March 18 against Notre Dame at Oak Ridge, Tenn.
