The 2006 Alabama cross country and distance runners are under the direction of Randy Hasenbank, who is in his first year as the Crimson Tide’s assistant track/head cross country coach.
In his first cross country season with the Tide Hasenbank led senior Julia Hicks to the All-Region team and a spot in the NCAA National Championship Race, the Tide’s first NCAA qualifier since 2000, and the eighth consecutive year in which one of Hasenbank’s distance runners have qualified.
The 2005 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year, Hasenbank joins the Tide after four years at Wichita State where he served as head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country teams and assistant coach for the track and field program. He led the Shockers to the 2005 MVC Cross Country Championship and his athletes earned four All-American honors and was named NCAA Midwest Region Athlete of the Year. For his accolades Hasenbank was named the assistant coach of the year for women’s distance events in 2006 by the United States Track and Field Coaches Association.

He coached Wichita State athletes to 64 All-Conference honors and 18 conference championships. His athletes broke 13 school records and earned 14 NCAA qualifying marks. At WSU he coached 12 Regional qualifiers and nine NCAA qualifiers. In addition his athletes earned four All-American honors, the Midwest regional athlete of the year and the MVC athlete of the year. Hasenbank’s runners also established all time MVC top marks in five different events.
Before joining Wichita State Hasenbank coached Andover high school track and cross country teams from the fall of 1994 to the spring of 2002. Hasenbank was named the 4A girls cross country coach of the year after his girls cross country team won the class 4A state title. While at Andover, he coached more than 90 state qualifiers and his athletes set over 20 school records. Hasenbank has also coached over 60 league regional and state championships. He also coached the boy’s cross country team to back-to-back state appearances for the first time in over 20 years.
As an athlete, Hasenbank earned All-American honors as a member of the Cloud County track and field/cross country team. At Wichita State he was a four-time All-MVC performer and led the Shockers to the 1989 MVC Cross Country Championship. A member of the Wichita State Athletics Director’s Honor Roll, Hasenbank earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1990 and a Master’s degree in Sports Administration in 1995, both from Wichita State.
Hasenbank is married to the former Lennis Whitehair, of Abilene, Kansas.
