TULSA, OKLA. ?? Joseph Jung represented the University of Alabama in the main draw of the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships on Thursday.
Jung, a senior from Deerfield Beach, Fla., drew the seeded Clement Reix of Clemson in the first round. Jung took the early lead in the match with a 6-4 victory in the first set. Reix came back to tie the score with a 6-3 win in the second set. The third set went down to the wire and Reix was able to edge out Jung for a 7-5 victory, advancing to the second round.
"It was a disappointing day for Joseph," said head coach Billy Pate. "He wasn't able to cap off a win against a great opponent. He had break point when he was up 4-2 and just couldn't get the game. He hit the top of the tape on one of his shots. There was a lot of tough competition at this tournament and a lot of players who are ranked pretty high."
In the back draw, Jung faced Florida's Nestor Briceno, who is the brother of Nicole Briceno a freshman on the Alabama women's tennis team. Briceno won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to advance on in the consolation bracket. With the loss Jung falls to 2-3 on the season.
Three members of the Crimson Tide men's tennis team will be in action this weekend at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational in Atlanta, Ga. Jordie Kindervater, Saketh Myneni and Taylor Striplin will be making the trip and will begin play on Friday with the final matches taking place on Sunday.
