TUSCALOOSA ?? In its first non-practice outing of the season, the Alabama women’s basketball team went through a three-period scrimmage on Friday night in Coleman Coliseum. Playing in game-like conditions for the first time this season, with officials and a running game clock, the White team defeated the Crimson team in all three halves of play.
The White squad won by game scores of 28-19, 28-24 and 26-22.
“We did some good things tonight, but we are definitely a work in progress,” head coach Stephany Smith said. “We have a lot of work to do before we open our season.”
The scrimmage also marked the debut for seven newcomers to the team for the upcoming 2006-07 season. Talisha Chandler, a member of that group, had an auspicious debut, scoring a combined 26 points to go with 15 rebounds in 60 minutes of play.
Senior Kate Mastin, the Tide’s best returning outside shooter, knocked down four treys on the night and scored 18 points. Navonda Moore, a preseason second team All-SEC honoree, had 13 points.
The Tide opens its season with an exhibition game on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 7 p.m., on its home floor in a matchup with West Alabama. After the second and final exhibition game against Delta State on Nov. 5, the Alabama opens the regular season against instate rival Samford on Nov. 10.
