For the second installment of its “Legends” series, the Alabama volleyball team will honor former Tide player Kristye Hall-Chastang before Friday night’s match against Auburn.
Hall-Chastang, who played at Alabama from 1989-92, was the Tide’s first recruit after the program was restarted for the 1989 season. Her freshman season was one of the best in history, as she finished with 618 kills, a total that was good enough for 15th in the NCAA that season and for third place all-time in the Alabama single season kill charts.
After finishing her career at the top of the Tide’s all-time charts in career kills and digs, she is still third all-time in kills at Alabama with 1,614, and fourth in attempts, with 3,798. Her 1,052 digs put her sixth in Alabama history.
“Kristye Hall-Chastang was one of the best athletes to come from the state of Alabama,” said Alabama volleyball head coach Judy Green. “She was in her own right a pioneer for the new era of Alabama volleyball in 1989.
“Besides being one of the all-time UA greats on the volleyball court, she is an outstanding person who has been as ambassador for our university and our volleyball program. It will be another time to celebrate the success of Alabama volleyball with Kristye and her family back on campus,” Green said.
After graduating from Alabama in 1992, Hall-Chastang went to physical therapy school at the University of South Alabama and is married with three children. She has been working as a physical therapist since 1997 and has started her own business, called the Buckaroo Barn, which helps children rehabilitate through riding horses and being outdoors.
“It’s an incredible honor, and I’m very humbled,” Hall-Chastang said. “I never expected this. Being at Alabama was one of the best times of my life, it was so much fun and was such a wonderful thing to play here. It’s a great honor, especially at the Alabama-Auburn game, which was always the most fun game to play in anyway.”
Alabama’s match against Auburn is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
