TUSCALOOSA ?? The University of Alabama men's tennis team earned victories in all eight of its singles matches and all four of its doubles contests on Friday at the 2006 Crimson Tide Fall Championships in Tuscaloosa.
The day started out strong for the Crimson Tide as they claimed victories in all four of their doubles matches. Dan Buikema and Mathieu Thiabaudeau continued their hot streak with an 8-5 win over Daniel Vallverdu and Vivek Subramanian of Miami. Billy Mertz and Javier Bes cruised to an 8-1 victory against Barnabas Carrega and Hector Nieto of Miami. The other two Alabama doubles teams each won 8-4. Saketh Myneni teamed up with Jordie Kindervater to defeat Miami's Josip Rupena and JC Whitner. Joseph Jung and Taylor Striplin paired together for a win against Weston Wendt and Kruno Despotovski.
"Even the ones that didn't go to three sets seemed like they were very close," said Alabama head coach Billy Pate. "We had three that went to the third set. We played a super breaker which is very tense. The guys were able to respond today and played the pressure points well. It made for a good day. We want to get through with some success and try to build on that to gain some momentum."
The Crimson Tide also had a great day in singles, winning five matches in straight sets and three matches in a super tiebreaker. Sammy Struyf and Buikema won by identical scores in straights sets 6-3, 6-2. Struyf defeated Nieto while Buikema downed Whitner. Myneni also won easily, defeating Wendt 6-2, 6-2. Thibaudeau and Striplin pulled out a tiebreaker win in the first of their matches and went on for victories in two sets. Thibaudeau defeated Rupena 7-6 (3), 6-4 and Striplin came away with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Despotovski.
Mertz won his first set against Subramanian 7-5. Subramanian would come back to force a tiebreaker in the second set and won 7-6 (4) but Mertz took the match, winning by a 10-7 margin in the third-set tiebreaker. Bes came out on fire sweeping the first set 6-0. Carrega came back on him to win 6-3. Bes gathered himself and edged out Carrega 12-10 in the super tiebreaker. Jung fell behind early, losing the first set 6-3. He battled back against Vallverdu to win the tiebreaker on the second set 7-6 and the super tiebreaker 10-8 for the win.
Play will continue on Saturday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium beginning at 9 a.m.
