Men?s Track Finishes Second in Illinois

The Tide’s sprinters had a great day, with Chauncey Harris, LaChristopher Lewis and Byron Gibson all setting personal bests in the 60 meter dash. Harris won the event in a time of 6.66 seconds, a mark that is the third fastest in the country this year and the fifth fastest time in school history. Lewis and Gibson finished fourth and fifth respectively in the event with times of 6.80 seconds and 6.86 seconds.
Harris also led the Tide in the 200 meter dash, finishing second with a time of 21.55 seconds. Lewis took third with a time of 21.63 seconds.
In the 400 meter dash, Michael Cooley and Lemual Clayborn finished fifth and sixth with times of 49.24 seconds and 49.36 seconds.
Marcus Siwemuke finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.13 seconds, but set a personal best in the qualifying round of the event with a time of 8.11 seconds.
Alabama also had a successful day in the distance races. Augustus Maiyo ran the 4th fastest mile in school history, 4:05.87, to finish second in the race. Maiyo also took second place in the 1,000 meter run with a personal best time of 2:27.31. Ian Rawlinson also scored points for Alabama in the 1,000, with a personal best finishing fifth in his first race for the Tide with a time of 2:32.85. Titus Koeh took fifth in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:22.96.
Peter Etoot took first place in the 800 meter run by six seconds, finishing with a time of 1:50.99. Abraham Kutingala and Alex Korir finished fourth and fifth in the 3,000 meter run, running 8:29.17 and 8:29.35 respectively.
Alabama’s distance medley relay team of Kutingala, Keith Baker, Koeh and Rawlinson finished first as well with a time of 10:01.54.
The field events also proved to be a success for the Tide. Baker took fifth place in the high jump with a height of 1.87m. Brandon Schneider and Jeremy Protz took fourth and fifth in the pole vault with a height of 4.75m. Lewis leaped 24’4 ??” feet to win the long jump. And in the throws, Jason Dixon, Steven Boozer and Baker finished second, third and fourth in the shot put respectively. In addition, Dixon and Boozer took first and third in the weight throw.
Alabama head coach Harvey Glance was proud of the Tide’s performance at Illinois.
“We had some big performances and a great meet here,” Glance said. “All in all we had a great meet from the sprints and hurdles, to the jumps and throws and distances. It was an all around great trip for us. I’m really proud of the guys. The team is working really hard to get better and better each week.”
