The Alabama volleyball team (12-1) captured the BSC Challenge championship Saturday night with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-17, 30-28) victory over Birmingham-Southern. The Crimson Tide's 12 match winning streak equals its best of the modern era (post 1988) having set the standard in 1995.
"We've just had an unexpected but exciting start to our season," head coach Judy Green said. "It's just a great tribute to how hard our players are working to find ways to win and we are really excited about that."
The tournament victory was the Tide's third of the season, having already captured the Bama Bash and the UWM Invitational. The championship also marked the first time since 1977 that UA has won three tournaments in a year.
The Tide defeated Jackson State 3-0 Friday afternoon and Belmont 3-0 Saturday morning to go undefeated in the event.
Kelley Potter, Bridget Fuentez and Rachael Green earned all-tournament honors for the tournament.
Fuentez and Brigitte Slack recorded double-doubles to lead the way for the Tide. Fuentez recorded 12 kills and 13 digs. Slack had season bests with 50 assists and 13 digs. Potter and Crystal Hudson also reached double figures with 15 and 13 kills each. Jessica Yearout and Sarah Snider contributed 16 and 10 digs respectively. The Tide out-killed the Panthers 53-26.
"I was extremely impressed with how well we dug the ball," Green said. "I think it also really shows how well our defense played in that we were able to limit them to less than nine kills per game."
The Panthers were led by Andra Krautmanis who had 10 kills. Alex Plummer (19), Jana Smelley (12) and Kelsey King (12) recorded double figure digs for BSC
The Tide returns to action Wednesday night at 7:00 in its first SEC match of the season in Auburn. Live stats for the contest can be seen at www.rolltide.com.
"We are going to be anxious to get back to practice and get better so we can go on the road to Auburn," Green said.
