Today’s practice was by far one of the most competitive practices we’ve had all preseason. We had people diving, running down balls, basically going all out to get the point. Our morning practice, speaking from a thug (middle) perspective, consisted of working on transition attack footwork for 20 minutes. We practiced footwork from different positions to make ourselves available for the setter to set us. Then for 10 minutes we did the same footwork but this time we had setters and defensive specialists digging and setting the ball. After going over footwork for 30 minutes it was time to put what we learned in live game situations. IT WAS TIME TO PLAY A LITTLE 6 VS 6. It was all out war, people digging rockets; bouncing bombs from the front and back row; and housing (blocking) hitters. THAT WAS JUST THE MORNING PRACTICE!! !
When we came back for our afternoon practice I was wondering if our team would still have the same high energy and competitiveness we had that morning. As soon as we stepped in the gym everyone had to put any aches, pains, and tiredness off to the side because it was time to compete. We played a serving game which entailed scoring 21 points individually. You scored 3 points by serving the ball into areas 2 and 5 on the court. You got 1 point for serving in and minus 1 for serving out. Jessica Yearout, Amy Pauly, and Sarah Snider won and as a consequence they made us walk from the end line to the 10 foot line on our derrieres (rear, hind parts, etc). We also reviewed transition footwork from the morning practice. THEN IT WAS BACK TO 6 VS 6!! ! Same intensity all around it was amazing. We were feeding off of each others energy and talking trash through the net. It was fun! Fun was one of the keys today and happened to be on our practice plan under thought of the day. The thought of the day was by Dale Carnegie: “People rarely succeed unless they have FUN in what they are doing.” Today was obvious proof of that. We ended practice as we always do with a team huddle and ended our huddle with, “WEIGHTROOM,” because that’s where we were headed after practice. We actually got to the weight room before 5:30 which was great. We lifted weights and did some ab workouts with our strength and conditioning Coach Jesper Sjokvist. Then he blessed us with the best gift anyone could give a team, he ended lifting early and we didn’t run outside. Before we went to the training room we ate fruit (people were sleeping on those bananas man). That was August 19 in a nutshell.
I want to say thanks to Sheree’ for my practice plan today (do what it do and remember we don’t stop eh eh eh) and Jeremy (aka J-DUB) for holding the shovel. Thanks Ms. Thompson for keeping things in order. Also thank you Ms. Merideth and Elizabeth for the ice and Gatorade. Thank you all for all ya’ll do for the team.
That is all I have to say, thank you for your time and ROLL TIDE!
