The University of Alabama volleyball team played a closely contested intrasquad match Sunday afternoon at the CAVE with the White team taking three out of four games to defeat the Crimson. The Crimson took the first game 31-29, but the White proved victorious in the final three, winning 30-28, 30-28 and 24-22. The Crimson vs. White game was used present a game day like conditions for the squad that is composed of nine underclassmen and only five upperclassmen
Alabama head coach Judy Green was pleased with the competitiveness of the scrimmage as well as the defensive effort.
“I thought it was a very competitive scrimmage,” Green said. “I think the thing that stood out to me the most, which got me the most excited was how we were playing defense and digging balls. I think our defensive effort was great I liked the fact that we passed the ball well in this scrimmage from a side out perspective. When you pass well, you should be able to side out at a high rate. Those two aspects I really like the most probably from the scrimmage.”
Green also saw several things that the Tide needs to improve on before opening the season next Friday night.
“The scrimmage also, on the flipside, shows you what we need to workout before we compete next Friday,” said Green. “I think we need to continue to put our servers in a pressure situation where they have to execute under pressure situation. Another thing is our tactical decision making in the last third of the game. What is our tactical decision making actually like and what are the choices that we are making. But, overall I was very pleased by it. It was a good scrimmage, it was very good volleyball. The people who did come out to watch got to get their first look at our new team.”
Alabama opens the season this Friday night at 7:00 p.m. against the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence. The Tide will also play UMKC Saturday at noon while in Kansas. The following weekend the Tide will host the Hampton Inn Bama Bash and will compete against Loyola (Chi.), Indiana and Oklahoma.
