The University of Alabama women’s soccer team defeated the Samford Bulldogs Saturday night 1-0 in a preseason exhibition played at Bulldog Field.
Crimson Tide senior Libby Probst picked up the golden goal at 45:31, just 31 seconds into the second half. Probst received a cross from Allison DeLisle and found the back of the net from 15 feet out.
“Obviously it’s good to get a win against a well coached squad on the road,” said Alabama head coach Don Staley. “We need to get a few more of these before coming home. I’m very pleased with how we played, especially in front of an excited crowd.”
Freshman goalkeeper Kara Gudmens preserved the victory late in the game with a brilliant save in the closing seconds. Alabama was able to clear the zone and hold on for the win.
Alabama’s leading returning goal-scorer Jordan O’Banion narrowly missed giving the Tide a two-goal lead mid-way through the second half. O’Banion’s shot crept just above the Samford goalkeeper’s hands but bounced off the cross-bar. Both teams managed seven shots on the night. Alabama had three shots-on-goal to Samford’s one.
Alabama will now prepare for its opening weekend of regular season action at the Tulane Tournament in New Orleans. The Tide will play Friday night at 7:30 against the Tulane Green Wave and Sunday afternoon at against North Dakota State.
