Mitchell Sweeps Titles at Crimson Tide-TTA Adult Open

Former Alabama tennis player and current tour professional Stephen Mitchell claimed two championships Sunday at the Crimson Tide/Tuscaloosa Tennis Association Adult Open presented by Merrill Lynch.
Mitchell defeated second-seeded and former Mississippi State player Romain Ambert in three sets in the Open final and teamed with another former Tide star Max Belski to win the Open doubles title.
“I’m proud that Stephen was able to play considering his busy schedule on the tour,” said Alabama head coach Billy Pate. “I’m equally proud that he was able to win the singles and also the doubles with his former teammate Max Belski.”
In the singles final, Mitchell had to come-from-behind and win the final two sets to claim the championship. Ambert took the opening set 6-4 before Mitchell finally seized control of the match, winning the final two sets 6-0, 6-1.
The Open doubles draw was a round-robin event. Mitchell and Belski finished a perfect 3-0. The duo defeated the team of Ambert and Jose Pinto, 8-5 in an 8-game pro-set to clinch the championship.
Mitchell took home $750 of the event’s $1,500 purse.
“For this tournament to be an inaugural event it was an outstanding success,” said Pate. “I certainly feel like the tennis community enjoyed playing at our new facility and we hope to have this event again in the future.”
