TUSCALOOSA- Four University of Alabama golfers will begin play in the 89th Alabama State Amateur Thursday. The tournament will be played at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Alabama. This 6,987 yard par 71 layout was designed by former U.S. Open Champion and former Crimson Tide golfer Jerry Pate.
Gator Todd, son of former Tide quarterback Richard Todd, will tee off on number 1 at 1:00 on Thursday. Todd competed in 11 tournaments in his freshman year and had a stroke average of 73.91. He narrowly missed qualifying for the U.S Open Monday in Atlanta.
Joseph Sykora, who just finished his redshirt freshman year, will begin his tournament on number 1 tee at 8:40 Thursday. Sykora competed in 12 tournaments for the Tide this year. He captured the prestigious Future Masters Tournament in 2002.
Lance Walker will tee off the first hole at 8:00 Thursday. He will be entering his senior season next year. In 2003, he teamed with former Tide golfer Wesley Pate to capture the State Four-Ball Championship, which was also held at Limestone Springs Golf Club.
Stewart Whitt will begin his tournament on number 1 at 8:10 on Thursday. Whitt redshirted this past season for the Tide. He qualified for the tournament by shooting a 71 at Indian Hills in Tuscaloosa, which tied him for low medalist honors.
The State Amateur is run by The Alabama Golf Association. It was founded in 1915, and they now run 8 State Championships. Five of the previous 88 Alabama State Amateur Tournaments have been won by Crimson Tide Golfers. Harry Pritchett won in 1928 and 1943. Bubba Major captured the title in 1969. Cecil Ingram was the champion in 1980, and Steve Lowery won in 1981. Sam Farlow was a four-time state amateur winner.
