TUSCALOOSA- University of Alabama volleyball coach Judy Green has released a 2005 schedule that she calls "probably one of the most competitive we have ever had." Green says that the non-conference schedule is highlighted with perennial NCAA Tournament teams, and the Southeastern Conference schedule will be more competitive than ever.
"I think at the point where our program is right now, it's very important that we play a highly competitive schedule," said Green. "One of the things that we know we will get for sure from the schedule is that we are automatically going to get great competition within the conference. The SEC certainly has improved its level of play in every program so the conference season is going to be challenging within itself. It's always been important for us to have a strong non-conference schedule because those significant teams on the schedule could be the ones that make or break you when it comes to getting a bid into the NCAA tournament."
The Crimson Tide opens the season against Big 12 power and perennial NCAA tournament team Kansas in Lawrence. Alabama will host the Holiday Inn Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa on September 2-3. Visiting Tuscaloosa that weekend will be Loyola (Chicago), Indiana, and Oklahoma.
"I'm extremely excited about our home tournament," Green said. "This is probably the highest quality of home tournament we have ever hosted. There are some big names, marquee names that certainly fans can relate to and we hope that that will increase our fan base. It's a schedule where the non-conference pre-season part can prepare us for the conference play. We needed to see teams that were going to be very similar to the teams that we play, and I think we have a really nice blend of teams like that in September."
Other non-conference matches include a trip to South Alabama, a home match against Alabama A&M and a spot in the BSC Challenge, hosted by Birmingham Southern. Alabama will also compete in the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee Invitational where Green says potential opponents Wisconsin- Milwaukee and Northern Iowa are likely NCAA participants.
Alabama opens SEC play September 21 at Auburn. The Tide's first home SEC match is against LSU on September 30.
Green says she is impressed with every team in the SEC, and says her team will have to bring their "A" game every night. Other home SEC matches are October 2 vs. Arkansas, October 14 vs. South Carolina, October 16 vs. Tennessee, October 19 vs. Auburn, October 23 vs. Ole Miss, November 4 vs. Florida, and November 6 vs. Georgia. Alabama will also host the 2005 SEC Championships November 18-20. The NCAA Finals are December 15-17 in San Antonio, Texas.
