Four members of the Alabama women's track and field team have made their way to Sacramento, Calif. for the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships which get underway Wednesday.
Junior All-Americans Beth Mallory and Tahesia Harrigan, along with junior Aymara Albury and senior Chafree Bain will all compete this week at Hornet Stadium on the Sacramento State campus.
Mallory will be among the first athletes to take the field Wednesday, competing in the opening round of the discus, the meet's first event, at 11 a.m. PT. Mallory, who will also compete in the hammer throw, is considered one of the favorites in the discus after winning the Southeastern Conference and NCAA MidEast Regional titles and finishing second in this event at last year's NCAA Championships. The Ashland, Ohio native also won the hammer at the regional.
Also throwing the discus will be Bain. The Nassau, Bahamas native is making her first trip to the NCAA Championships and is coming off her best year wearing the crimson and white, with career best throws in the hammer and the shot put.
Harrigan will run the 100 and 200m dash. The Totola, Virgin Islands native posted a career best in the 200m at the NCAA MidEast Regional, taking third place. She tied her career best in the 100m at the SEC Championships. She is seeded 14th in the 100 and 12th in the 200. She'll run the first round of the 100m on Wednesday and 200m on Thursday.
Albury will throw in the first round of the shot put on Thursday. The school record holder in the shot, Albury finished second to teammate Mallory in the shot at the SEC Championships, earning second team All-SEC honors in the process.
Alabama finished 22nd at last year's NCAA Championships, largely on a pair of All-American performances by Mallory.
