TUSCALOOSA – University of Alabama women’s basketball head coach Stephany Smith announced the signing of Camilla Blands to a national-letter-of-intent to attend the University and play basketball for the Crimson Tide this fall.
Blands, a 5-11 point guard, is a native of Naerum, Denmark and comes to Alabama following a solid playing career at Falkonergaarden High School in Copenhagen. She becomes just the third international student-athlete to compete for the Crimson Tide in women’s basketball joining Aycan Yeniley (Turkey, 1993-94) and Rebecca Baragry (Australia, 1997).
“We are thrilled to have Camilla coming to Alabama to join our program,” said Smith. “She is an extremely mature person both on and off the basketball court. Camilla is an excellent student and a talented athlete. She has good size, especially for the point, and possesses strong leadership skills. Some of her greatest assets are her focus, determination and work ethic.”
A standout prep player, Blands played for the SISU Club team that captured four Danish Youth National Championships. She was named her club’s Player of the Year and she was also selected to the Nordic Championships All-Star team. Blands played in 11 games for the Danish Youth National team and also participated in eight games on the Danish Women’s National Team including seeing action at the official Nordic Championships. She was the lone junior player selected to play for the Women’s National squad.
Blands joins previous UA signee Harriet Barnes in the Crimson Tide’s newcomer class for the 2005-06 season.
