Alabama junior Beth Mallory, the 2005 NCAA Discus Champion, finished seventh in that event at the USA Track and Field Championships being held in Carson, Calif. this week.
Mallory posted a throw of 186 feet and eight inches on her third of six attempts. She was the youngest competitor in the top-10. She finished just six feet out of third place, which would have given her a spot on the U.S. World Championship team that will compete in Helsinki, Finland this summer.
The discus winner, Rebecca Breisch, was the 2004 NCAA discus champion. She won the U.S. title with her final throw, going 206-05. Seilala Sua, the NCAA record holder in the discus, was second with a throw of 202-10.
And while Mallory’s work at the USA Track and Field Championships is done, Alabama head coach Sandy Fowler, in her role as head coach of the United States’ World Championship squad, is still hard at work. Fowler, who just completed her eighth season at Alabama, was an assistant coach on the U.S. Olympic squad in 2000.
