Daphne’s Joseph Sykora, who will be a sophomore on the University of Alabama golf team in 2005-06, won a sudden death playoff to claim the only sport available in the Alabama qualifier for the 80th U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Sykora defeated fellow Daphne native Mark Ogren at Bessemer’s Bent Brook golf course. Sykora shot 70-66/136 to tie Ogren’s two round totals of 67-69/136 and force the playoff. Sykora birdied the playoff hole while Ogren’s birdie putt lipped out.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links will be held July 11-16 in Lebanon, Ohio at Shaker Run Golf Club.
