The University of Alabama women's tennis team (8-14) received its fifth consecutive bid to the NCAA Tennis Tournament Wednesday afternoon and will play in-state foe South Alabama (18-6) in the opening round in Nashville, Tenn. next weekend.
"We are extremely excited," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "The post-season is a whole new season and anything can happen. We've had time to rejuvenate and regroup and now we're ready to go."
This is Alabama's seventh bid to the NCAA tournament in the last 13 seasons and fifth consecutive bid under Mainz, who is in her eighth season as Alabama head coach. The Tide is 4-6 all-time in the NCAA tournament and has advanced the second round in four of its previous six appearances.
The Tide's first round opponent, South Alabama, will be a familiar one. The two teams played on April 13 in Tuscaloosa with USA winning a close 4-3 decision.
"We know we have our work cut out for us with South Alabama," Mainz said. "They're a strong team and it's nice to have another chance at them."
The first two rounds of the 2005 NCAA Tennis Tournament will be played May 13-14. Vanderbilt University will be the host for the Tide's regional and will determine exact times later this week. If Alabama advances past the first round it could face a possible match-up with SEC rival Vanderbilt in the second round.
