Alabama junior Beth Mallory, who won the NCAA MidEast Regional hammer throw title on Friday, added the discus title Saturday on the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington, Ind.
Mallory won the discus with a throw of 189 feet and seven inches, matching her longest throw of the season. She was more than five feet better than second place.
“It was really good. It was my best performance this year,” Mallory said. “I had good consistency with my throws. It’s awesome. I’m ready (for the NCAA Championships). It’s going to be fun.”
Junior Tahesia Harrigan qualified for the NCAA Championships in both the 100 and 200m dash. She ran an 11.42 in the 100 to take fourth place. She was third in the 200m with a career best run of 23.25. Junior Aymara Albury grabbed fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 53-06.50, qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Junior hurdles standout Beau Walker was brought low with severe cramping during the 4x100m relay, forcing her to pull out of the 100 and 400m hurdles, where she was the top seed.
“She gave it everything she had, trying to get that baton around to the next leg,” Alabama head coach Sandy Fowler said. “She is a gutsy, courageous competitor.”
Mallory, Albury and Harrigan all advance to the NCAA Championships being held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif. June 8-11.
