Tide Men's Track Has Great Outing at SEC Championships

The University of Alabama men’s track and field team closed out a solid performance at the 2005 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Nashville, Tennessee this weekend.
The Tide placed third, eighth and tenth in the pole vault, led by Matt Vogtner who posted a personal best vault of 16’06.75” finishing third and picking up six points for Alabama. His vault was a regional qualifying mark and was the eighth highest vault in school history. Jeremy Protz also posted a personal best mark in the event, with a vault of 15’11.75” finishing eighth and scoring a point for the Tide. Brandon Schneider finished 10th with a mark of 15’05.75”.
The Tide’s 4x400m relay team of LeMual Clayborn, Curtis McBride, Peter Etoot and Michael Cooley ran its fastest time of the year with a mark of 3:08.76, a NCAA Regional qualifying time. The team picked up five points for Alabama.
Peter Etoot posted a sixth place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:49.50, an NCAA Regional qualifying mark, picking up three points for Alabama.
Augustus Maiyo and Titus Koeh also collected a point each for the Tide as both finished eighth in their respective events, Maiyo in the 5k (14:14.64) and Koeh in the 1,500m (3:49.95). Maiyo’s time in the 5k was also a NCAA Regional qualifying time.
“I’m real proud of the entire team,” said Alabama head coach Harvey Glance. “We had a lot of personal bests, seasonal bests and regional qualifying times. We did much better this year than last year and we seem to be coming into our form at the right time.”
Alabama finished eighth overall with 39 points, a spot higher than last year’s ninth place finish.
Alabama now sets its sites on the NCAA Mid-East Regional Championships which will be hosted this weekend in Bloomington, Indiana beginning on May 27.
