The Alabama (3-0-4) soccer team used goals from Libby Probst and Gillian Kilburn to tie UAB at the Orange Beach Classic Saturday, 2-2, and finish the spring season undefeated for the first time in school history.
The Tide finished the spring season by redeeming a pair of losses from the fall to Auburn and UAB, both second round NCAA tournament teams. Alabama tied Auburn on April 16 and UAB Saturday.
“I’m extremely proud of our team and this is certainly something to build off of,” Alabama head coach Don Staley said.
Libby Probst got things started for Alabama on Saturday when she put the Tide ahead 1-0 off a re-start in the first half. Later in the half Alabama stretched its lead to 2-0 when Gillian Kilburn received a pass from Susie Beard then beat several UAB defenders for the goal.
“We switched a few things up in practice this week and it paid off for us,” Staley said. “The bottom line though is that we accomplished what we set out to do this spring. It was an outstanding developmental time for us and I think we are all excited to start the in the fall.”
Eleven new freshmen will join the Crimson Tide when practice starts in the fall and will add much needed depth. However, Alabama lost just two starters from a team that qualified for the post-season in 2004.
