NASHVILLE, TN. -- The University of Alabama men’s tennis team lost Friday to the Vanderbilt Commodores, 5-2. Alabama is now 7-11 overall and 0-7 in the SEC.
The story of the night for Alabama was freshman Javier Bes, who won in just his second match back in the line-up after suffering an injury to his right arm four weeks ago. He played at No. 4 singles for the Crimson Tide and defeated Nathan Sachs in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.
Joseph Jung picked up the only other win on the night for Alabama at No. 2 singles. Jung defeated Vandy’s Matt Lockin 7-5, 6-3.
Jung’s victory pulled Alabama to within one of Vanderbilt at 3-2 and gave the Tide a shot at pulling out the win. However, Alabama had to win each of the remaining two matches and couldn’t do it.
Alabama backed itself into a tough position again Friday by losing the doubles point. In fact, Vandy took all three doubles matches from Alabama. The deficit proved to be too much for Alabama to overcome.
Friday’s match was the first of two SEC road matches this weekend for Alabama. Next the Tide will take on Kentucky in Lexington, Kent. on Sunday.
