The University of Alabama men’s track and field team has announced the signing of Spain Park High School standout Patrick Wells.
Wells, a pole vaulter, will bring a wide array of credentials to the team in the 2005-06 season. Wells won the 2003 Indoor and 2004 Outdoor state championships in pole vault en route to being named Team MVP both years. He also earned all-state status in 2002, 2003 and 2004. A recipient of the Bob Finley Character Recognition Award in 2005, Wells is also quite the basketball player. He was named to the 2004 All-Metro Team and was also named team captain from 2003-2005.
However, Alabama jumps and field coach Rod Tiffin doesn’t feel that will pose in problem for Wells.
“Patrick’s quite the two-sport star and has progressed well at both,” said Tiffin. “But we feel once he concentrates on just one sport we’ll see the strength he brings to the table and the team immediately.”
