BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- University of Alabama senior outfielder Gabe Scott (Lake Charles, La.) has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week following his performance in the Crimson Tide's series win at No. Ole Miss this past weekend in Oxford.
He is the third UA player recognized by the league office this season. Sophomore left-hander Wade LeBlanc and junior right-hander T.J. Large have both won SEC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Scott is the first Alabama player to earn SEC Player of the Week honors since Allen Rice was honored for his play against Georgia on March 17, 2003.
Scott was Alabama's leading hitter for the second week in a row as he batted .583 (7-for-12) with three home runs and seven RBI. He also scored six runs and compiled a 1.333 slugging mark and a .688 on-base percentage. He reached base 11 of 16 times in the three-game series, including four walks.
"Gabe has become a real middle of the lineup hitter," Alabama head coach Jim Wells said. "He has really improved and the go-to guy of late for us."
Scott slugged two home runs in the series opener, including a game-tying home run in the eighth inning of the Tide's 5-4 win. It was his first career multi home run game at Alabama.
He added another game-tying home run on Saturday, with a three-run blast in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6. Alabama trailed 6-0 entering the inning and Scott tied the game with his fifth home run in five games. He later added an RBI single in the the seventh inning as part of a four-run inning to erase a four-run deficit and tie the game at 10-10.
Scott went 2-for-4 in the series finale and reached base four times, with a pair walks. He led off the third inning with a single and later scored what proved to be the winning run on Allen Rice's first career grand slam that gave Bama a 6-2 lead in an eventual 12-6 victory.
The Lake Charles, La., native hit safely in all three games at Ole Miss to extend his career-best hitting streak to 21 consecutive games. During the streak, Scott is batting .437 (31-for-71) with 16 runs scored, five home runs and 15 RBI. He has raised his season batting average 207 points since the streak began on Feb. 26.
For the season, Scott leads Alabama with a .407 (33-for-81) average with five home runs and 16 RBI in 27 games. He also has a .630 slugging percentage. In 12 SEC games, Scott is batting .476 (20-for-42) with five home runs and 13 RBI. He has an .833 slugging percentage in league play.
