He’s only been here for a year, but Dwight Rogers has already left his mark at the Capstone. In his first tournament as a member of the University of Alabama golf team last March, Dwight shot a hole-in-one during play in the 2004 Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational at Ol’ Colony. In his first season, he played in four tournaments, finishing the season with a stroke average of 76.22. Before coming to Tuscaloosa, Dwight spent two years at the University of Florida. While there, he was named Academic All-SEC and Academic All-American. He also finished T-20 at the 2002 Florida State Amateur. Not only did Dwight bring experience to the Capstone, but personality as well, which you’ll find as Dwight takes some time to let us in on his teammates, life before golf, and even takes us back to the 1990s.
You transferred here from the University of Florida last year. Are you still a Gator fan?
“No! I’m 100 percent Crimson Tide.”
If you were stranded on a deserted island, which of your teammates would you want to be with you?
“Joseph Sykora. He has a high GPA and is really smart. He’s also very handy. He works on cars and stuff like that. Plus, he’s a really good guy and I enjoy hanging out with him.”
The Masters is coming up soon. Who will you be rooting for?
“My brother dates Bernhard Langer’s daughter. Our families are really close, so I’ll be rooting for him. He’s a two time champ and was fourth last year. He’s played well.”
Do you play any other sports?
“Growing up I played everything. I never thought I would be playing golf in college. I played a lot of football and baseball. I had a shoulder injury that ended my baseball career. Then I played football and golf. But during my junior year, they switched golf to the fall so I had to make a decision between the two. I had been playing well the summer going into my junior year and was really enjoying it, so I chose golf. It was a tough decision because my dad played football, but overall, I just really enjoyed golf more.”
What’s your favorite 90s television show?
“I don’t really watch too much TV, but it’s probably The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Will Smith’s a cool guy.”
