TUSCALOOSA - All five University of Alabama golfers finished among the Top 25 in helping the Crimson Tide hold off a final round charge by Georgia State to capture the team's second consecutive Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational on Sunday at Ol' Colony Golf Complex.
Alabama carded a final round 291 en route to a tournament total of 881, three shots in front of runner-up Georgia State (884). The Panthers, coached by former UA golfer and assistant coach Matt Clark, fashioned the low round of the tournament on Sunday shooting a six-under-par 282 to move up from fourth to second.
Tide senior Clint Provost led the way for Bama firing a final round three-under-par 69. Provost finished in 11th place at 224. Junior Thomas Hagler (76) and Joseph Sykora (73) were Alabama's low finishers in the event tying for third-place with scores of 220. Freshman Gator Todd also posted a Top 10 showing finishing tied for ninth at 223 including a final round 78.
Freshman Mark Harrell rounded out the Tide's tournament squad earning a tie for 22nd at 228 (73). Bama juniors Dwight Rogers (T-29th/ 230) and Lance Walker (T-53rd/ 239) both competed as individuals in the event.
"It is always a great feeling and real pleasure any time we can win a tournament," said UA head coach Jay Seawell. "We were the defending champions, but four of the five players in this year's group did not play for us last season. I'm very proud of Clint's performance today. He did what you expect your only senior to do and his play was really the difference for us. Georgia State made a real charge today and we just needed people to step up and play."
The tournament title marked the fourth time the Crimson Tide has won its own spring event and second year in a row. The rest of the final team standings after Alabama and Georgia State included UAB in third at 900 followed by Michigan State (906), Tulane (917), Memphis (918), Mississippi State (924), Michigan (926), Ole Miss (926), South Alabama (930), Jacksonville State (931) and College of Charleston (942).
In the individual medalist competition, Georgia State's Steve Tiley fired a closing round six-under-par 66 for a tournament total 211, to capture the title by six shots over teammate Ty Harris (217).
Alabama will now have two weeks off from competition before returning to the links on Mar. 27-29 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay event in Charleston, S.C. followed by the Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga., on Apr. 2-3.
