Junior Peter Etoot headlined a successful final day for the Alabama men’s track team at the SEC Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Etoot posted a second place finish in the 800m with a time 1:49.78, finishing .3 seconds out of first place. Etoot’s finish scored eight points for the Tide.
Also scoring for Alabama was Chauncey Harris who finished seventh in the 60m dash with a time of 6.82 scoring two team points. Bama’s 4x400m relay team consisting of LeMual Clayborn, Curtis McBride, Marcus Siwemuke and Michael Cooley also posted a seventh place finish with a time of 3:10.90 garnering two team points. The distance medley relay team of freshman Augustus Maiyo, Keith Baker, Jonathan Rono and Etoot also posted a seventh place finish with a time of 10:04.68 winning two team points.
However, it was Maiyo who was the most pleasant surprise. Maiyo recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:02.39 in the 5k while finishing fifth and picking up four points for the Tide. Maiyo’s time was the third fastest in school history. His performance was only a day removed from his time of 8:08.95 in the 3k, the eighth fastest time in school history.
“Our place in the standings isn’t indicative of how well we competed,” said head coach Harvey Glance. “I’m really excited on how the team performed today and all weekend, especially Augustus Maiyo who put forth a great effort. It just happens that we’re in a great conference. A lot of the times and marks we recorded this weekend would have been good enough for first and second in other conference championship meets.”
The Crimson Tide posted a ninth place finish with 32 points. The Arkansas Razorbacks claimed first place and their 12th SEC Indoor Championship.
The Crimson Tide will now participate in Last Chance meets in Gainesville, Florida and South Bend, Indiana next weekend in preparation for the NCAA Indoor Championships held in two weeks in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
