The seventh ranked Alabama softball team ran its record to 16-1 on the season behind the strong right arm of senior pitcher Jennifer Wright and some timely hitting by the Tide en route to a 5-1 victory over the Troy Lady Trojans (13-4).
Wright (6-0) collected her sixth win of the season allowing one unearned run on three hits while striking out six in five innings of work. Chrissy Owens (FR, Miami, Fla.) came on to pitch the final two innings in relief allowing nothing while striking out five of the six batters she faced.
First baseman Dani Woods (FR, Cockeysville, Md.) got the Tide on the board in the top of the second inning, blasting her second home run of the season, a line shot that cleared the centerfield fence for a 1-0 Alabama lead.
The Tide added some much needed insurance in the top of the fifth inning on a two-out, bases loaded double by Ashley Courtney. Staci Ramsey started the rally with a single to right field and was pinch run for by Katie Johnson. Dominique Accetturo drew a four-pitch walk followed by a fielder's choice by Leah White loading the bases for Courtney. Courtney doubled to left-center field clearing the bases and advanced to third on the throw home to get White. Lady Trojan catcher Gamra Howren threw down to third in an effort to get Courtney but the ball sailed into left field allowing Courtney to score for a 5-0 game.
The Lady Trojans answered in the bottom of the fifth inning, plating a run to cut the Tide lead to 5-1 but it was as close as they would get.
Bama will get little rest as the team opens action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Friday against the 23rd ranked Oregon Ducks followed by a match up against the Florida Atlantic Owls. First pitch against Oregon is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Fans can follow all the action on WVUA 90.7 FM as Herb Ragsdale and Chad Anderson call all the balls and strikes.
