After four and half months away from competition, the University of Alabama soccer team will get back into the swing of things this weekend as it kicks-off its spring schedule in Germantown, Tenn. at the Memphis Fury Tournament.
“We’re very excited to get back out there and get started again,” Alabama head coach Don Staley said.
The tournament will begin Friday, February 25 and run through Sunday. Alabama has three games scheduled for this weekend. Two will come against Middle Tennessee State and Memphis while the third will come against an international team from Japan.
The Crimson Tide has five dates scheduled this spring for competition that will resemble a mini tour of the state of Alabama. After this weekend’s competition, Alabama will play two games in Huntsville, one game in Tuscaloosa and one game at the Orange Beach Classic. An Alumni game is also scheduled for April 9 in Tuscaloosa.
Obviously, the focus for Staley and his staff this spring will be player development. The Tide will lose four seniors from last year’s squad that finished 10-11 on the season and advanced to the SEC tournament for the first time since 1998.
“We’re going to get the opportunity to look at a lot of different things this spring,” Staley said. “We’re going to run different formations to see what works best for us and give our players looks at key positions, but this will also give our girls a great chance to improve and get a lot of reps in game situations.”
Alabama will welcome in 11 new freshmen when fall camp opens in August.
