Alabama T-10th After 1st Round at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. – Clint Provost opened his final spring season of collegiate play at even par Sunday in the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship. The Pensacola native and senior golfer shot 72 Sunday morning on the course at Sawgrass Country Club and goes into Monday’s second round tied for 13th .
His was the low round of the day for the University of Alabama which is tied for 10th after one round among the field of 17 teams. Alabama shot 297, nine over par, Sunday. South Carolina, the tournament’s defending champion, is the first round leader. The Gamecocks shot 286 and are two under par with a two stroke lead over LSU (288). The team standings find Tennessee third (291), Florida and UCLA tied for fourth (292), Augusta State and Kentucky tied at sixth (293), Duke at ninth (294), Alabama 10th (297), UAB 11th (299), Arkansas 12th (300), tied at 13th North Florida and Central Florida (301), Coastal Carolina at 15th (306), Northwestern 16th (308) and Florida State 17th (322).
Five golfers are tied for first in the individual standings, all shooting two-under-par. The quintet includes Kentucky’s John Holmes, Duke’s Nathan Smith, South Carolina’s Robert Svensson, Georgia State’s Ben Taylor and Georgia State’s Ben Taylor, all of whom shot 70 Sunday.
For Alabama, Provost is T-13th (72) at even par; three golfers, Thomas Hagler (who parred 12 holes), Mark Harrell, and Gator Todd are among a tie at 38th at three over par, 75; and Joseph Sykora is T-69th after shooting six over par, 78. Sykora and Harrell both birdied holes in the first round, Harrell at No. 5 and Sykora at No. 4.
Alabama begins second round play at 8:30 a.m. CT. The tournament concludes with the third and final round on Tuesday.
