TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Due to the likely chance of heavy rain forecasted for Tuscaloosa on Sunday, the University of Alabama baseball team will play a double header with UNC Asheville on Saturday, Feb. 19 to avoid a rainout on Sunday.
The teams will play two, nine-inning games on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. The second game will begin 30 minutes following game one. The start time was moved up one hour due to the start time of the Alabama men's basketball game with South Carolina, which begins at 2 p.m.
"We understand this time change may be an inconvenience to some of our fans, but we think this will be the best for everyone involved," Alabama head coach Jim Wells said. "By playing at 3 p.m., we are hoping to eliminate some of the congestion in the parking lot and give our fans the opportunity to see two baseball games and also to support our men's basketball team in their quest for the SEC Championship.
"We need to play all three games this weekend and looking at the weather today, this seems to be the only way to accomplish those goals."
The Saturday double header will be the second of the season for the Crimson Tide. Alabama split a twinbill last Saturday in Honolulu with the University of Hawai'i after the second game of the series was postponed due to rain.
Following its three-game series with UNCA, Alabama will travel to UAB this Wednesday, Feb. 23 to face the Blazers in a 6 p.m. game at Jerry D, Young Memorial Field. The Crimson Tide opens a 17-game homestand next weekend as they host the Duquesne Dukes in a three-game set beginning Friday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m.
