Sophomore Joseph Jung has been one of Alabama’s top tennis players in over the last two seasons. As a freshman, Jung won 23 matches to lead the Crimson Tide in victories. This season he is second on the team in wins with 11. But Jung has another talent away from the tennis court that he enjoys participating in and that’s music. We talked about Jung’s musical talents, and little bit about his tennis abilities, in this week’s Serve and Volley.
The Serve: So you’re a musician. What instrument do you play?
The Volley: I play guitar and the violin a little bit. But I haven’t played violin much lately. I stopped when I started playing tennis.
S: You laughed. Do you call yourself a musician?
V: No, not really.
S: How did you get started playing the guitar and piano?
V: I don’t really know. There was one classical guitar in my house when I was 14 and I guess I just wanted to start playing. I found a bunch of chords on the back of a song book and then picked a song and started playing. I kind of taught myself how to play.
S: What’s your favorite style of music and what is your favorite song to play?
V: I’ve really only played guitar in church so I’ve mostly played just gospel songs.
S: How did you get started playing tennis?
V: My parents liked to play tennis a lot. My dad was in the Army and the base always had a lot of tennis courts so they were always playing. I would go to the courts with them and play around. I guess I just picked it up.
S: Did you ever play any other sports growing up?
V: No seriously, no.
S: Do you have any superstitions that you do before or during a match?
V: I go to the bathroom.
S: If you could play doubles with one person, who would you choose?
V: RJ (Murray). We’ve played together for the last two seasons.
S: You’re a pretty quiet guy. How do you stay so calm on the court?
V: I don’t try to stay calm, it’s just the way I am. But I especially don’t want to show myself to my opponent. If I’m mad I don’t want my opponent to see that.
