Alabama Puts Two Divers in SEC Championship Finals

Two Alabama divers finaled during day one of the SEC Swimming and Diving Championships held on the Florida campus this week.
Junior Aaron Ashworth and senior Stewart Smith both scored among the league's top-eight. Alabama and South Carolina were the only teams to have to athletes in the finals. Ashworth finished sixth on the one-meter board with 320.70 points while Smith was eighth with 293.75 points.
Crimson Tide diving coach Pat Greenwell who said before the meet that to have both men final would be "unbelievable," was very pleased with the Tide's first day effort.
"Both Aaron and Stewart made it happen in the morning," Greenwell said. "It's another tough field this year and for both of them to be in the final eight is a great accomplishment. This was a good start for us."
Sophomore Alan Harris finished 17th, one place out of scoring position with 255.45 points while freshman Chad Frichtl was 19th with 248.50 points.
Earlier in the day sophomore Jenna Hastrieter and junior Crystal Rasmussen both scored for the Tide, taking 11th and 13th respectively in the women's three-meter springboard competition.
Sophomore Karissa Tuthill was 20th off the three-meter board with 385.80 points.
Diving action resumes tomorrow at the O'Connell Natatorium with the men going on the three-meter board and the women competing off the one-meter. The swimming portion of the championships get underway Wednesday.
